Introduction: What is Amalaki ?

Amalaki, also known as Amla or Indian Gooseberry, is one of the most celebrated fruits in Ayurveda. It is called Dhatri (धात्री), which means "the earth mother," because of its nourishing, balancing, and healing nature. Used in many classical formulations such as Triphala, Chyawanprash, and Brahma Rasayana, Amalaki is considered the best Rasayana (रसायन), or rejuvenative, in Ayurveda.

As an Ayurvedic Vaidya, I prescribe Amalaki for a variety of health conditions, ranging from weak immunity to skin disorders, poor memory, and premature aging.

Botanical and Traditional Profile of Amalaki :

  • Scientific Name: Emblica officinalis Gaertn. (syn. Phyllanthus emblica Linn.)

  • Common English Name: Indian Gooseberry

  • Sanskrit Names: Amalaki, Dhatri, Vayastha, Amritaphala
